Abstract

The article presents the results of the empirical study of neuropsychological stability indicators, resourcefulness, and stress levels of mothers of children with mental retardation. Peculiarities of self-assessment, self-regulation, anxiety of mothers of children with mental retardation have been described. A suspended level of anxiety, which contributes to the emergence of neurotic conflict, accompanied by emotional and neurotic disruptions, etc., has been proven. The study included the detection of stress levels by several methods and allowed to establish the fact of maximum stress level of respondents and the lack of psychological resources to compensate and master the latter. It has been established that, in general, mothers of children with mental retardation are in a state of chronic stress, often depressed and prone to resource burnout. It has been revealed that most mothers of children with mental retardation are prone to a depressive state or are already in this state, and also prone to neurosis. The psychological state of the mother is one of the leading features of improving the quality of life and adaptability of a child with the mental retardation. A correlation analysis of stress and resource indicators of the study group had been conducted and analysed, which allowed to establish links between anxiety, low adaptability, and depression. These results allowed to identify key points of influence for the organization of psychological help for the studied category of the mothers. Studied indicators of mothers who took part in the survey allowed to determine that they show a low level of stress resistance. Thus, the obtained results clearly confirm the assumption about the special need for psychological support for mothers of children with mental retardation: the necessity to develop a program aimed for sustaining their resourcefulness, skills of coping, reflection.
Key words:
stress, resources, mental retardation, anxiety, neuropsychological stability.
